Our Hylton Skills Campus recently played host to over 200 people at a special Emergency Services Family Fun Day, held in partnership with Northumbria Police.

The event saw primary school children and their families from across Wearside experience the work of police, paramedics and RNLI coastguards with special demonstrations and videos.

Youngsters even got the chance to try on uniforms and have a look inside police cars and ambulances. They also met one of Sunderland AFC’s team mascots – Samson!

The youth development group brought along a climbing wall for thrill-seeking visitors to try and KICKS (associated with SAFC) hosted a penalty shoot out.

Alison Maynard, Director of Vocational Skills at City of Sunderland College, said: “The Fun Day was a huge success and we’re pleased to have welcomed so many local families on site.

“The outreach programme helps young people in the local area engage with the emergency services and find out a little more about the life-saving work they do on a daily basis.

“By breaking any barriers which exist between members of the public and the organisations, we will hopefully encourage the public to fully support emergency services in continuing to keep Sunderland a safe place to live, work and play.”

Neighbourhood Beat Manager, PC Martin Cottle, said: “For many of the youngsters it was the first time they had spoken to a police officer and I hope we put them at ease. Events such as this help us to get to know the people who live in our communities and we hope that now they’ve met us, they’ll come up and say hello if they see us on patrol.

“I’d like to thank everyone who took part for offering their support and to City of Sunderland College for allowing us to hold the event within their grounds. I’d also like to extend our gratitude to Staples and B&M for offering prizes for our free raffle. All made it a great day.”
