Students call on Gordon to tell them if he thinks they’re tasty!

Catering students from Sunderland College are challenging food critics to come along and tell them what they really think about their skills.

The youngsters work in and run a professional restaurant – The Lounge Bistro and Bar at the College’s Hylton campus but struggle to get foodies to take them at face value. So now they’ve issued an open invitation to them to come along and judge for themselves.

The students also plan to write to celebrity chefs asking them to pop in if they are in the area and hopefully deliver a masterclass – along with their verdict on the restaurant’s food and professionalism.

They’ll be writing to everyone from TV favourites such as Gordon Ramsey and James Martin to more locally-based kitchen maestros like Rockliffe Hall’s Kenny Atkinson.

Kathryn Shepherd, Front of House Coordinator said: “Visitors to The Lounge are often bowled over by the quality of the food, the presentation, service and the professional way they are treated.

“Then there’s the price of course – £8.75 for a three course meal is terrific value – plus, of course, we have all the ingredients for a great night out.

“We’d love it if some food industry professionals would come along and give our students some hints, tips and inspiration. They are after all the next generation of catering experts in the making. ”

The fully-licensed restaurant offers a range of cooking styles and uses locally sourced seasonal ingredients.

The students would really like to gain some wider recognition for the work they do and it’s frustrating when they aren’t taken seriously and judged on a par with other eateries.
