Shooting stars are victorious

On -Target Sunderland College students have won the ultimate in local derbys – the North East Colleges League – without even dropping a game.

The Sunderland cross college enrichment team had its best ever season scoring 70 goals in 16 games and beating neighbouring colleges hands-down.

The league includes colleges from Gateshead, Newcastle, Bishop Auckland, North Tyneside, Darlington, Durham and Northumberland and competition is fierce.

The Sunderland team was formed as part of the enrichment programme which guarantees the College provides a top quality experience for all students – who can take part in a range of activities alongside their courses.

James Hair, Enrichment Officer, said: “This has been such a fantastic season for the lads and having won every single game we finished the league on a real high – it’s been celebrations all round.

“This is a great way to build the further improvement of skills into the curriculum – for example team work, which we know is key to employers.

“Being part of a team can also bring people out of themselves and build their social skills. It’s fun and a great way for students to get together and play a sport they’re passionate about.”

Glen Hargreaves team captain, said: “It’s great to be crowned league champions and to have done so unbeaten. It’s been a tough season with strong competition but we’ve worked hard and look forward to next year, when hopefully we will win again.”

The team of 20 of students aged between 16 and 19 and studying on a range of courses from A Levels to Electrical Engineering have received a trophy as winners of the North East Colleges League championship.

In further footballing success, the colleges Football Development Centre team has added to their already impressive haul of silverware by winning the Albert Knox Durham County Cup for the third year running.
