Sunderland college is teaming up with a line-up of leading locally-based businesses to host a recruitment fair to help adult and younger students bag themselves a Christmas career.
We are inviting employers from a range of sectors, who are seeking suitable recruits for their Christmas vacancies, to attend the event which will be held on Wednesday, October 16. Among the employers already signed up to take part in the fair are Sainsburys, More Than, Mecca Bingo, Empire Theatre and Cineworld who will discuss their vacancies and highlight the qualities they are looking for in applicants keen to apply for a Christmas post.
Current and former students from across the area are invited to come along and meet with employers to find out more about temporary posts over the festive period, which will give them the chance to gain work experience. Those currently claiming job seekers allowance can book a place through their local Jobcentre Plus office.
Anne Isherwood, principal, said the careers fair would give students the chance to find out more about vacancies that will not only give them some money for the festive period, but to also gain valuable experience in a real work environment and perhaps turn into a more permanent role.
She said: “The jobs fair will give previous students, specifically those who have completed pre-employment training courses, a fantastic opportunity to meet with employers and understand the roles on offer.
“We have an important role to play in supporting people into work, many of the roles available may be short term but they are an important step towards gaining employment in their chosen career path. Many of the people who have attended previous fairs have been offered a job, have enjoyed it immensely and worked very hard, and have often been kept on by employers to fill part time roles.”
She added: “The fair can open many doors for students. I would encourage students to attend. It will certainly help to boost their employment prospects.”
North East retail consultant and business mentor Graham Soult commented: “Retail is the UK’s largest private sector employer, and it’s fantastic to see some of the biggest names in the retail and leisure industry taking part in this event at Sunderland College. The career opportunities in retail are exciting, challenging and numerous, and this fair is a great opportunity for students to get themselves in front of potential employers, and for businesses to meet some of the region’s hottest new talent.
“Taking a temporary role with a big-name employer this Christmas will provide students with invaluable connections and work experience for the future – and with many of Britain’s top retail bosses having started in similar roles, the sky’s the limit in terms of where it might lead!”
The event will take place at Sunderland College’s Bede Campus, Durham Road, on October 16 from 11am – 2pm, and it will be attended by the team at the college to support students seeking employment.
