Smoking Shelters - Important announcement

Important information for all students regarding smoking on college premises.

At a recent meeting of the Governing Body a decision was taken to permit smoking within designated areas on college campuses.  The reason for this decision was that there have been a number of adverse criticisms where staff and students are smoking on the public highway outside of college entrances.  Therefore, as of Monday 4th November the college policy on smoking will be as follows:-

  • Separate staff and student smoking shelters will be sited at Bede, Hylton and Washington Campuses.

At Bede

Both staff and student shelters are currently located in the car park area between unit 1 and unit 2. The location of the staff shelter is temporary until further works are undertaken to accommodate a smoking area adjacent to the car park.

At Hylton

The student shelter is located across the access road from Beechwood reception. The staff shelter is located adjacent to the car park at the far end of Beechwood building

At Washington

The student shelter is located adjacent to the cycle racks. The staff shelter is located in the service yard area

In line with the Universities policy no provision has been made at St Peters but students should not smoke outside of the main entrance.  Shelters have not been introduced at Shiney Row as we will shortly be vacating the campus.  The designated smoking areas at this site are as follows:

Designated student area is the hard standing adjacent to unit 401.  Designated staff area is adjacent to the external fire escape stairs of the North Building.

  • The college will continue to support both staff and students who wish to give up smoking and a number of smoking cessation sessions will be communicated in due course.  Meanwhile for those who may wish to take immediate action further information can be found at www.smokefree.nhs.uk
  • The smoking policy applies to the use of electronic cigarettes which can only be used in the designated smoking areas.
  • Contravention of the policy may lead to disciplinary action being taken.

Your full co-operation on this matter will be much appreciated.

Anne Isherwood

Principal
