Higher education students at Sunderland College will have the opportunity to study in Scandinavia thanks to a unique partnership with a Danish university.
Students on a range of HND courses will be able to spend a year studying at the University College of Northern Denmark (UCND) to top-up their qualification to a full honours degree.
Around 50 students could take advantage of the agreement when the programme launches in September 2016.
Subject areas covered in the contract include computing and systems development, manufacturing and engineering, electrical engineering, construction and the built environment, business management and travel and tourism.
The top-up courses, which are taught in English, will be free of charge to students as European Union citizens who choose to study in Denmark do not have to pay tuition fees.
Support will be available to students to ensure they have a smooth transition from UK to Danish education, including guidance through the application process, and help in finding accommodation and part-time jobs in Denmark.
Tim Field, Sunderland College’s head of higher education, said: “This is a great opportunity for any HND student who wants to broaden their horizons and experience a different culture, while receiving lessons in state-of-the-art facilities from highly experienced staff – and on top of this there are no fees to be paid.”
Sunderland College principal Anne Isherwood met with Carl Redmond from UCN to officially sign the agreement.
Mrs Isherwood said: “Our partnership with UCND heralds a new chapter for the college as we look to strengthen our international offering. We have signed a unique agreement which enables our students to develop their knowledge in an international setting, and the educational and cultural experiences they gain during their time in Denmark will certainly benefit them in the future, both personally and professionally.
“We have had an excellent reaction from our HND students, many of whom have registered their interest in progressing their studies abroad, and we are confident that our partnership with UCND will be very successful.”
Carl Redmond added “University College of Northern Denmark (UCN) is delighted to sign an articulation agreement with Sunderland College as it opens for great opportunities for students to pursue their future studies to the bachelors level in Denmark, giving themselves highly valued global competences on their CV. The fact that UK citizens do not pay tuition fees in Denmark will most probably make the agreement very attractive.”
