Why become a governor?

Be a part of the future of education

If you have a passion for education and training then we’d welcome your application to join the team at a forward-thinking, innovative college.

Sunderland College is a large, successful college with a quality reputation based on results, including a 99% pass rate for the last six years and delivering 1000 Apprenticeships in the last year with an impressive 92% securing full-time employment.

There’s never been a better time to be part of our Board of Governors.  With a brand-new, industry-led, £29m City Campus which opened in 2016 and newly-built facilities for Sport and Visual and Performing Arts the college is on the edge of a new and exciting chapter.  Forging and strengthening links with employers across the region is key to the college’s ongoing success and the Board of Governors play a pivotal role in networking and opening doors to new opportunities.

The work of a Governor is enjoyable, challenging and rewarding. Governors are volunteers, coming from a variety of cultural and industry backgrounds including education, business, law, local government and the not for profit sector. What we ask in return, is that you:

  • Attend meetings of the Board
  • Read papers in advance of meetings
  • Participate in discussions and debates
  • Gain experience through membership of Board committees
  • Participate in training events and attend various social events
