George Blyth

George was appointed to the Board in February 2011 when he retired from his role as Director of Financial Resources at Sunderland City Council.  George is currently employed by Gentoo Group and seconded to Academy 360 where he works 2 days per week.

George is Chair of the Audit Committee and a member of the Governance Committee.

“I was born in Sunderland, the son of a Wearmouth Colliery miner. I was educated at Grange Park primary and Southmoor secondary schools, followed by higher education at Sunderland Polytechnic (now Sunderland University) where I studied Business Studies. I have lived and spent all of my working life in Sunderland, where I was employed as an accountant with the City Council. I retired in January 2011 as Director of Financial Resources, although I still do some part-time and voluntary work.

I was invited to join the College Board of Corporation in February 2011, specifically to provide my experience and skills as an accountant. I currently Chair the College’s Audit Committee.

I was delighted to be invited to join the Board, which has given me the opportunity to help develop and sustain educational opportunities for other local people like myself. I am a firm believer that we all have the potential to do great things, irrespective of our background, given the opportunity and appropriate support. Sunderland College is a first class facility that offers that opportunity and support and I am proud to be part of the College team.”
