Prevention and Control of Infection
Who is this course for?
Infection control is relevant to numerous sectors, including food preparation and medical services, and is of major concern in hospitals and other health care settings. It is the responsibility of everyone who works in or visits such environments to ensure that the spread of infection is avoided. The qualification is ideal for those who wish to gain an understanding of the causes of infection and how these can be managed and controlled.
What do you need to apply for the course?
If you wish to undertake this certificate you must be aged 18 or over. You will need to have at least a Level 1 qualification in literacy as you will be expected to write answers for assessment purposes. To assist in the delivery and understanding of this qualification, you should have access to hand washing facilities and a range of personal protective equipment (PPE), including gloves, aprons, gowns, disposable overalls, masks and eye protection.

What are the key things you'll learn?
The qualification aims to develop your knowledge of prevention and control of infection and is designed to raise awareness of infection control legislation and policies. You will look at the methods of cleaning and waste disposal that help prevent the spread of infection, along with the personal protective equipment you should use for your own safety. This knowledge will be underpinned by an increased understanding of the causes of infection, the conditions in which they thrive and the ways that they can spread.
How you will learn
You will be allocated your own study pack and have a personal tutor who you can contact throughout your studies. You will be required to work through a series of tasks and activities designed to reinforce the learning process and demonstrate your knowledge. This will mainly consist of a written assessment for each unit, which will be assessed by the tutor as well as two simple observation exercises.
