As one of the most prestigious universities in the country, attracting over 17,000 students from all over the world, Durham University turned to Sunderland College to support their IT Department in up-skillling their new recruits.
Durham University’s IT Department supports the entire IT networking and infrastructure, offering first line support for both staff and students. After recruiting new staff members to the team, they were keen to support them in gaining relevant IT qualifications through an apprenticeship programme with Sunderland College.
Initially, four of the IT team members were enrolled onto a Level 3 ICT Apprenticeship and a tutor was appointed to support the employees throughout their journey with monthly visits planned
in advance. Following the successful completion of their Level 3 ICT Apprenticeship, two employees progressed within their team to a more senior role and are now undertaking a higher apprenticeship in ICT alongside a HNC in Computer Systems Development with Sunderland College. In total, Sunderland College have supported seven ICT Apprenticeships for Durham University in the last couple of years and this number continues to grow.
One of the apprentices Jack Strangward, was awarded The Durham University Apprentice of the Year 2015-16 for Professional Service.
“Working with Sunderland College has been a very positive and rewarding experience, we needed a training provider who we could work closely with and build a relationship with. Sunderland College understood our requirements and have been very supportive with our apprentices and this has resulted in some excellent outcomes and we are very proud of what they have achieved.”
