Sunderland College is the North East of England regional testing centre for IELTS. Accredited by the British Council we provide both the academic and general test for people looking to gain an IELTS score for what ever their requirements.
Our IELTS centre is open Monday to Friday, 9am – 4pm.
What is IELTS?
The International English Language Testing System is used to assess the language ability of people who need to study or work in a place where English is the main language of communication. The test has an academic and general version depending on your requirements and both cover the four main language skills – listening, reading, writing and speaking.
Who needs IELTS?
IELTS is a useful test for a variety of people who require an official qualification to prove their skills in the English language:
- Non-native English speakers need IELTS in order to pursue academic study in the UK, an IELTS test score is requested by most British colleges and universities.
- IELTS is recognised by employers in the UK and necessary for some non-native English speakers who want to work in positions such as doctors, nurses, dentists and pharmacists.
- Anyone, including native English speakers, who may be required to confirm an official IELTS score in order to seek immigration to Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
Before registering for an IELTS test please note the following important information:-
On 20 February 2015, the UK government announced important changes to Secure English Language Tests (SELT) for visa purposes.
If you make a visa application to stay or move to the UK, you need to be aware of changes made by United Kingdom Visas & Immigration (UKVI).

Cancelling or Transferring your Exam
If you cancel your test or request a transfer five weeks or more before the test date, the test centre will charge an administration fee of £25.00. If you cancel your test within five weeks of the test date you will not be eligible for a refund unless you can prove illness or serious cause, for example hospital admission or injury; death of a close family member; victim of crime, victim of a traffic accident. You will need to complete a Request for Refund or test Date Transfer Form and attach medical/supporting evidence.
