Pupils from six secondary schools on Wearside have enjoyed an exciting sporting challenge hosted by City of Sunderland College.
The annual two-day sports event gives Year 9 and 10 students the chance to give a variety of team sports a go as well as receive expert coaching for those wishing to perfect their sporting skills.
This year, pupils and staff from Southmoor Community School, Sandhill View School, Thornhill School, Seaham School of Technology, The Venerable Bede Church of England Secondary School and Academy 360 attended at the Goals Soccer Centre, which is based at the College’s Bede Centre in the heart of the City.
The impressive onsite facility houses ten all-weather pitches and a sports pavilion. It opened in December 2010 to help increase participation in sports across the City.
The sessions were organised and run by a team of the College’s students, currently studying their second year of a Level 3 Extended BTEC National Diploma in Sport (Development, Coaching & Fitness).
The college students passed on their expert fitness tips coached on a variety of sports including football, handball and hockey and refereed each match as well as coordinating the timetable throughout each day.
Teams from each school then went head-to-head during the fast-paced matches which eventually saw Sandhill View School crowned the triumphant winner of the first day and Academy 360 claim the title on the final day of the tournament.
Andy Grainger, a lecturer in sport at City of Sunderland College, said: “The two-day event has been a great challenge for the pupils taking part and a fantastic learning experience for our students who have worked very hard to organise the tournament as part of their course.
“By working to engage schools from across the city to take part in a variety of sporting activities, we’re encouraging the pupils to develop their confidence, teamwork and social interaction skills as well as learn how to interact with other young people.
“We’re extremely pleased with how the sessions went and all of the schools taking part certainly made the most of the opportunity to try something new. I’d like to thank everyone involved.”
City of Sunderland College offers a range of qualifications in Sport for school leavers including BTEC Diplomas in Sport (Development, Coaching and Fitness) and Sports and Exercise Science.
The Goals Soccer Centre is open to members of the public and pitches are available to book.
