New restaurant manager calls on community for support

The Lounge, Sunderland College’s Hylton Campus restaurant, has a new manager. The restaurant provides a real life learning environment for more than 80 students and Kathryn Shepherd, 35, intends to ensure people have even more reason to give it a try.

A training restaurant has appointed a new manager who intends to ensure people have even more reason to give a future generation of top chefs a try.

Kathryn Shepherd, 35, is front-of-house co-ordinator at Sunderland College’s Hylton Campus restaurant The Lounge.

The restaurant is open to the public and supports more than 80 students training to be chefs, hospitality managers and front-of-house staff.

Kathryn started her own career in catering young, working in a coffee shop from the age of 13. Now she’s passing on 22 years of knowledge to the students.

“Many people in Sunderland still aren’t aware just what a fantastic restaurant we have here and that they can come along for a meal.

“We’re keen to encourage more people from the local community to visit The Lounge as it gives the students invaluable real-life experience – preparing them for when they have to go out and get jobs of their own.

“We have some very talented students here who will go on to be fantastic chefs.” said Kathryn from County Durham.

Having previously worked for the Marriott Hotel group and Durham County Cricket Club, Kathryn is responsible for the restaurant and conference facilities at the Hylton Campus.

She said: “I’m enjoying working with the students, they’re all so eager and curious. They work extremely hard and relish every opportunity to gain experience we can give them cooking and serving in the restaurant.

“The head chef has put together a Christmas menu that the students hope will attract more members of the public to come in and sample some of the delicious food we have on offer.

“The food is top quality and because it’s mainly run by the students it’s all very reasonably priced.”

As well as the usual Christmas fare the menu includes ‘terrine of chicken liver and pork with spiced figs and toast, shallow fried fillets of plaice with lemon and prawn butter sauce, and sticky toffee pudding with toffee sauce.’

The fully licenced restaurant is located on North Hylton Road and open to members of the public for lunch between noon and 2pm Monday to Friday and Thursday evenings between 7pm and 9.30pm.

*The Christmas menu is is available from November 21 to December 16. For more information download the menu below or to book a table call 0191 511 6270.
