Holiday camp cabaret comes to Sunderland

A world champion acrobatic gymnast and an amateur dance troop entertained over 200 people at a holiday camp style cabaret in Sunderland last night.

The cabaret, called ‘The Last Dance’, was organised and performed by Sunderland College travel and tourism students and raised over £700 for The Royal British Legion.

Songs and dances from musicals including Hairspray, Burlesque and The Rocky Horror Picture Show were performed to a sell-out crowd packed into the North Shore student union venue.

The show also contained original dances and a gymnastics routine from World Gymnastic Acrobatic Champion and Sunderland College student, Jesse Heskett.

A group performed a routine from the 2010 musical Burlesque, starring Cher and Christina Aguilera. One of the performers, Nathan Trott, 19 from Fulwell, Sunderland, was dressed as a drag queen.

Nathan said: “We were all very nervous about getting on stage in front of so many people but it went extremely well and the crowd really responded to the performances.

“I’ve performed on stage before but never as a drag queen so it was a new experience that took some getting used to.

“It was a fantastic night and hopefully we’ve raised a lot of money for a very good cause.”

The annual event is part of the student’s coursework and goes towards their final grade.

Kelly Mounsey, a travel and tourism lecturer at Sunderland College worked with the students to organise the performance.

She said: “Since Christmas the students have worked extremely hard to put on a professional performance for the public to enjoy.

“They did extremely well and I’m very proud of them all.

“Being second year students many of them will soon be leaving the college to go onto university or to find jobs within the travel and tourism industry. I wish them every success in the future.”
