Sunderland College footballers finish year on a high

Sunderland College’s Football Development Centre (FDC) rounded off another successful season, winning the Durham Schools’ FA County Cup by beating Bishop Auckland College 4-0.

Friday’s (May 18) final saw Sunderland College under 19s travel to New Ferens Park in Durham to play the final game of the season and win the trophy for the second year running.

Sunderland College’s FDC is located at their Bede campus and improves students’ footballing skills as well as teaching them about football development, coaching, health, fitness and careers in the sport.

John Gamble, head coach at the FDC, said: “It’s been a fantastic year for the FDC. Not only did our under 19s win the cup but our under 18 side won the North East College League, losing only once all season.

“We’ve got a terrific group of lads who are all dedicated and train hard. I really feel that with the wealth of talent here at the FDC many of the students could go onto make a professional living out of the game.”

The team took an early lead with striker Callum Patton scoring before Jack Stanger (ok) scored with two headers and Tom Alderson adding a fourth goal for the side late on.

Callum Patton, 18, has enjoyed a successful year after being called up to play for the England National College team, travelling abroad on a recent tour of Estonia.

Team captain, Luke Richardson, 18, said: “After a slow start to the season we’ve gone on to do really well, dominating many of the games we’ve played. The team has finished strongly and to win the cup for the second year running was excellent.”

Michele Di Mascio, lecturer and FDC coordinator at Sunderland College said: “This group of students have been a real pleasure to have and I’ve enjoyed seeing them all develop into better players.

“The quality and brand of football we have played has been a joy to watch and on the day there is no better team than us. They have been a credit to their coaches and to the college. I wish them all the very best of luck in the future.”
