A cut above the rest

Sunderland College launched its new Barber Shop training facility with a fund-raising event for national charity My New Hair.

The college has invested in the new training academy at its Hylton Campus, which teaches students the latest barbering techniques and traditional skills in a fully functioning salon environment.

Mark Sowerby, course leader at Sunderland College, said: “Male grooming has come a long way since the days of the traditional barber’s shop. But we’re keen to teach these techniques as well as modern male grooming skills.

“The students will learn how to do hot towel shaves as well as hair cutting, styling and clipper art. The aim is that these future barbers leave the college fully equipped with the latest industry knowledge and work-ready.”

The launch event raised money for My New Hair, a charity set up by Trevor Sorbie MBE. It provides a national network of professionals who provide wig styling and advice for people suffering from cancer and medical hair loss.

By offering free hair-cuts and styling in exchange for a donation to My New Hair, the launch event raised over £100 for the charity. The college is continuing to raise money for the charity at the Barber Shop until the end of the week.

Trevor Sorbie MBE said: “Sunderland College’s launch event has raised money that will help us continue to help people suffering from hair loss.

“My New Hair isn’t just about hair, its psychological medicine for people suffering from hair loss through illness and for many of the clients I have seen, it’s the missing link in their treatment.

“It was my personal experience of helping a family member during cancer treatment that inspired the idea of my new hair.

Sunderland College worked closely with the barbering industry to ensure that its salon was equipped with the latest styling products and tools. The Barber Shop has been kitted out with American Crew, Easy Dry and Kent Brushes among other leading brands.

The Barber Shop is open to the local community to make bookings for one of its services. To find out more go to www.sunderlandcollege.ac.uk
