Charity arts and crafts event promises to be full of Christmas sparkle

Visual and performing arts students are busy preparing for their Charity Christmas Arts and Crafts Day

Santa Claus and his elf will be travelling especially from the North Pole to Sunderland College to meet and greet youngsters at a free fun-filled Christmas event.

Father Christmas and Buddy the elf have taken time out of their busy schedule to make a special appearance at the college’s Christmas Charity Arts and Crafts Day on Tuesday 15 December in aid of Crisis.

The festive event takes place in the multi-million pound Arts Academy and features a host of Christmas-themed activities for both children and their parents, including workshops, entertainment and craft stalls.

Jane Reed, head of visual and performing arts, said: “We are very excited to transform the Arts Academy into a winter wonderland and welcome children and their parents to our special Christmas event. Our staff and students have been working very hard over the past few months to make sure it will be a fun and exciting day, and we’re sure it will get people into the Christmas spirit!”

Music students will be entertaining guests with performances of acoustic tunes and carols, and photography students will be on hand to take snaps of children with Santa and Buddy in their impressive magical grotto, created by art and design students.

Youngsters will get the chance to take part in Disney Christmas-themed dance sessions as well as drama workshops where children will act out stories based on ‘A Christmas Wish’.

There will be plenty of Christmas craft stalls selling a range of cards, decorations and gifts – from traditional baubles to festive wreaths – which have been made by graphic design and art and design students, and there will also be stalls from external Christmas craft traders.

In addition to the seasonal items for sale, visitors who fancy rustling up their own Christmas decorations can take part in craft DIY workshops on the day, which will be led by higher education visual arts students.

The event, which has been organised by visual and performing arts staff and students, includes free refreshments for children and Starbucks will also be open for people who fancy a warming winter drink.

Sunderland College’s annual charity Christmas concert will be held on the same day, with performances scheduled at 6.30pm and 7.30pm.

‘Jingle Bede’ has been organised by BTEC and foundation degree music students and will feature a mix of popular Christmas songs, from Wizard to Wham, as well as the recreation of a well-known Christmas advert with the help of hundreds of special guests from the Rock Choir and the Drama Lab.

Sunderland College’s Christmas Charity Arts and Crafts Day will take place on Tuesday 15 December from 2-6pm at the Arts Academy, Bede Campus. ‘Jingle Bede’ will be performed in the Arts Academy Theatre at 6.30pm and 7.30pm, with tickets available on the door for £1. All proceeds raised will be donated to homeless charity Crisis.
