Students enhance knowledge with engineering visit

Advanced Manufacturing Engineering apprentices visited an engineering manufacturing company to develop their knowledge and understanding of engineering processes.

The apprentices were given the opportunity to visit Express Engineering, a company based on Team Valley Industrial Estate that specialises in innovative precision manufacturing solutions.

The visit involved a briefing by CEO John Patterson on the company’s history and their planned developments. John also inspired the apprentices by giving them an insight into his own career development and the exciting possibilities for young people entering the engineering sector.

The apprentices also had a behind the scenes tour of the company’s industry leading facilities.  They learnt about the engineering modules specialising in aerospace, oil and gas, nuclear and sub-contracting capabilities, and the state-of-the-art CNC machining centre, which produces precision components for all sectors using a wide range of materials including titanium and super alloys.

Jeff Bower, Engineering Lecturer at Sunderland College, said:

“The visit to Express Engineering allowed the apprentices to put their learning into context. They experienced a greater understanding of the benefits of CNC machining and the properties of super alloys in their two hour visit than they would have done in any classroom based session.”
