Who is this course for?

This is ideal for you if you want to increase your knowledge and awareness of mental health. Mental Health and Well-being is a national ambition and this qualification is suitable for those of you wishing to gain an understanding of Mental Health, as well as for those who are already working or volunteering within Education, Health, Housing, Social Care or Youth Work related sectors who wish to gain a recognised qualification.

Studying this qualification will help you to understand mental health legislation, services and public attitudes and how these have evolved, as well as how to support mental well-being through various stages of life.  You will also gain an understanding of mental ill health, treatment options available and the potential consequences of mental ill health.  This course will enable you to develop the skills required to work in a mental health or related service.

What do you need to apply for the course?

You need to be aged 19 or over to apply for this course.  You will be required to possess or be working towards level 2 English and Maths qualifications. This is a knowledge-only qualification; therefore no real work environment placement is required.

What are the key things you'll learn?

You will study a range of topics including:

• Unit 01 Understanding the context of mental health and wellbeing

• Unit 02 Promotion of mental health and wellbeing

• Unit 03 Mental health problems: associated issues and consequences

• Unit 04 Understanding mental ill health

• Unit 05 Working in mental health.

How you will learn

You will be required to produce a portfolio, and will participate in a range of teaching, learning and assessment strategies to include individual and group work activities and tasks, essays, leaflets, mini presentations, workshops, booklets, posters and discussions.  There are no exams.

Where could this course take you?

Once you have achieved the qualification you could progress to a number of qualifications including:

  • HNC Healthcare Practice for England (Integrated Health and Social Care Pathway) Level 4
  • HNC Healthcare Practice for England (Public Health & Health Promotion Pathway) Level 4
  • Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools Level 3
  • Award in Education and Training Level 3

You may also be able to gain employment within a number of sectors including Health, Education, and Youth Work, Social Care, Housing or offer support charities and voluntary organisations.

What costs will you incur?

The course cost is £795 and you need to attend to attend college one half day per week.   Additional costs will included items such as stationery to create your portfolio and some resources for presentations and posters if required.
