Who is this course for?
This is an introductory level course for beginners or those who are new to sewing. It is for those who want to learn how to use a sewing machine and to create well-fitting garments.
What do you need to apply for the course?
There are no formal entry requirements, as this course is for those who have never used a sewing machine before or have just made simple pieces.
What are the key things you'll learn?
During the course there is a structured progression taking you from your machine driving test, sewing with accuracy and precision through to making a sample garment, and then researching, creating and fitting your own garment. The emphasis is on producing high quality work with tailored quality finishes.
How you will learn
You will attend weekly sessions, working through a series of practical exercises, building on each new skill. There are sewing machines available to borrow but it is preferable to use your own machine. You will create a portfolio of work which is submitted for your final assessment. There is no formal examination but you will have small amounts of homework throughout the course.
Where could this course take you?
On successful completion of the course, you could progress to Level 2 Art and Design, Fashion or Textiles. Following Level 2 you could progress to a foundation degree in fashion.
Career options are, alteration hand, sample maker, pattern cutter, designer, cutter, garment technologist.
What costs will you incur?
You will need to buy a basic sewing kit, advice at the beginning of the course will be given on this. A file for keeping all your written work or a sketch book to create a journal. You will also require a sewing pattern and cloth to make your final project.
