Who is this course for?

This course aims to build on the skills developed in NCFE Level One Textiles (Dressmaking for beginners) and will introduce you to the creative enterprise opportunities within Fashion and Textiles industries. You will develop your ability sufficiently over the course to achieve a Level 2 Certificate in Creative Craft (Textiles) qualification from NCFE.

What do you need to apply for the course?

Entry requirements are the successful completion of an NCFE Level 1 Award in Creative Craft – Textiles (dress making for beginners)or those with some previous experience and you should possess a general interest in employment opportunities in the Fashion and Textiles industries. This specialised course should appeal to adults 19+ with a range of abilities.

What are the key things you'll learn?

This specific area of study will require you to investigate creative enterprise and employment opportunities in the Fashion and Textiles industry. It will also allow you to create a finished garment through the exploration of the design process and the application of machine sewing techniques, pattern adaptation, design development and the associated processes. The mandatory units of the certificate include the following modules;

• Use materials, tools and equipment to develop craft techniques (3 credits).
• Investigate creative enterprise and employment opportunities (5 credits).
• Develop craft ideas (4 credits).
• Create, present and evaluate final item (3 credits).

Initially you will explore creative enterprise and employment opportunities. Additionally you will explore construction methods as well as develop research and design skills. Each skill will enable you to create a final bespoke sample garment to accompany the business plan you will create in the creative enterprise and employment unit.

How you will learn

You will attend weekly sessions, working through a series of practical experiments and techniques, building on each new skill. There is no formal examination to the course, but to achieve the NCFE Level 2 Certificate in Creative Craft (Art & Design) qualification, you are required to submit a portfolio of coursework for assessment. Staff will advise and assist you on the presentation, collation and review of this work as part of the course. You will be required to complete small amounts of homework throughout this course.

Where could this course take you?

On successful completion of your NCFE Level 2 Certificate in Creative Craft (Textiles) (18 weeks) you can progress to BTEC Fashion and Clothing, Access to HE, or Foundation Diploma. It could also give you the skills to set up your own fashion or textile craft business

What costs will you incur?

You will be advised at the beginning of the course about the basic sewing items you will need and a file for keeping your written work or a sketchbook to create a journal.
