Functional skills is a stepping stone qualification brought in to help students progress to L2 and/or prepare for their GCSE studies. Functional skills is a more flexible alternative to GCSE for many people and focuses on applying basic mathematical skills to the real world, rather than the more abstract maths found in GCSE.
We offer Functional Skills at a range of levels including:
Level 2 - A similar level to a GCSE grade 4 or grade C
Level 1 - A similar level to a GCSE grade 2 or grade E
Entry Level 3 - A level slightly below GCSE
Many employers and universities accept Functional Skills Level 2 in place of GCSE, but always check this before enrolling on the course.
Each level of Functional Skills takes about 16 weeks to complete and is assessed by an external exam.
This course is available at our City Centre Campus and our Bede Campus as well as Washington Campus on a Monday evening.
This course is free of charge for anyone 19+ who does not already hold this qualification or GCSE grade C/4 or above.
You do not need any official qualifications. You will need to complete a diagnostic assessment to confirm your strengths and areas of improvements. You may also benefit from completing the Level 1 Functional Skills Maths before enrolling on this course.
