What’s it all about?

This course has been designed for people who are interested in pursuing a career in the engineering and manufacturing industries, or who would like to progress to a Higher Education programme or an apprenticeship.

The course offers students the opportunity to develop their hand skills and employability skills within an engineering environment. You will work in the college's industry standard workshops to enhance your engineering skills, whilst also working on your theoretical knowledge, with the main focus being around the vocational aspects of the engineering sector. such as maintenance, mechanical engineering, CAD design and electrical installation.

The entry requirements for this programme are as follows, A full Level 2 Engineering/Welding Qualification or 4 GCSE's at grade 3 or above (Including English) and Math's at grade 4. Learners with alternative qualifications may also be considered following discussion with the relevant course leader on an individual basis.

19+ please enquire As part of the programme you will be expected to contribute to the cost of PPE relevant to your programme of study (overalls and safety footwear), these costs will be discussed in detail at enrolment. It is also expected that you will equip yourself with basic stationery including: Pens, Pencils, Lined Paper, Scientific Calculator, Rule and an A4 Ring binder

The course is assessed using a range of methods including assignments, practical projects and presentations. These have been based on 'real world' scenarios to prepare you for the Engineering Industry.

The course includes an online examination and internal externally set assessments, these contribute to the grade awarded overall for the qualification.

In the Engineering sector English and Maths are important skills that will help you to achieve your best in your studies and help you to progress along your chosen career path. If you have not already achieved a grade 4-9 in GCSE Maths and/ or English at school, we will support you to improve your skills with GCSE sessions included within your college timetable.

During your time studying, you may be offered the opportunity to attend a work placement with an engineering company to further enhance their knowledge of the industry.

The course is delivered at our City Campus Monday - Friday, between 9am-4.30pm.

Days and times of study are subject to change and are dependent on group allocation. Timetables are confirmed at the start of term with students typically attending 3 days per week.

Exact days and times will be dependent upon group allocation and entry level qualifications. This will be discussed further at enrolment.

The programme is currently structured with the following modules of study:

- Health and Safety
- Computer Aided Design Techniques
- Installation of Electrical Equipment
- Mechanical Engineering Principles
- Advanced Turning

These may be subject to change during the academic year.

Our teaching staff have a vast range of industrial experience in a broad range of areas within engineering and continue to enhance their industrial skills. As a college, we have recently invested significant capital to ensure that the facilities and equipment available to students matches those used in industry which gives them a direct link to industry.

What’s next?

After completing this course you could progress to a higher education engineering course. The programme could also be used as ‘off the job’ training whilst you apply for Apprenticeships in Engineering or as preparation for following an Engineering career in the Armed Forces.
