What’s it all about?

This course is ideal for students who are aiming to progress to employment or to Higher Education in the vital sector of Health and Social Care. With a growing number of jobs available in the sector this is an ideal course for those with a passion for Health, Care and making a difference.

You will have the opportunity to develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours required by employers. The course will enable you to:
- prepare for further learning or training
- develop essential knowledge, transferable skills and personal skills in health and care with the aim of enhancing your employability
- develop your knowledge and skills as part of their Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
- achieve a nationally recognised vocational qualification.

You will also have the opportunity to acquire the essential knowledge and tools for the world of work by developing transferable skills such as planning, research and analysis, working with others and effective communication.

You could progress to a range of careers such as social work, nursing, psychology, midwifery or physiotherapy.

Five GCSE’s at grade 4 including Maths and English or a full level 2 Diploma in Health and Social Care.

DBS Clearance is also needed to attend placement.

This course is taught through classroom learning, development of practical skills in our state-of-the-art health hub, directed study and placement allowing you to apply theory to practice and develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours that are required by employers.

You will be assessed through, course work which includes, presentations, reports, essays and role plays. The course requires you to attend 100 hours work placement in year 1 and year 2 of the course – one day per week. This will enable you to link your care practice to the units delivered in the classroom.

A GCSE grade of 4 or higher in Maths and English is a pre-requisite for this course. If you do not achieve a grade 4 in both Maths and English then you would study our Level 2 in Health and Social Care for 1 year and then progress to this level 3 course.

Employers such as the NHS, Sunderland Care and Support, Health Education England, Skills for Care, Sunderland Council, Home Group, Age UK and the Alzheimers Society all support with the co-design and co-delivery of our courses.

Your timetable will be issued at enrolment. Timetables usually run across 4 days in college between the hours of 9am-4.30pm. Your timetable will also include a designated time for your placement hours.

- Assessing Children's Development Support Needs

You can progress on to employment or degree level study health and social care related areas, leading to careers in areas such as social work, psychology, midwifery, nursing or physiotherapy.

There is a growing demand in Sunderland and the North East for occupations such as:

- Nurses
- Social Workers
- Probation Officers
- Care and Home Workers
- Senior Care Workers
