Governance

The City of Sunderland College is a Statutory Corporation set up by order of the Secretary of State under the Further and Higher Education Act and is governed by its Instrument and Articles of Government. The College is also an exempt charity. Upon merger with Northumberland College on 22 March 2019, the City of Sunderland College started trading at a group level as Education Partnership North East, and at the college level as Sunderland College, Hartlepool Sixth Form and Northumberland College.

The Corporation consists of members from all walks of life and a cross section of the communities which it serves including representatives form key stakeholder groups including staff and students.

Our Governance Structure

Under the current Articles of Government the Corporation is responsible for:

  • The determination and periodic review of the educational character and mission of the College and the oversight of its activities;
  • Publishing arrangements for obtaining the views of staff and students on the determination and periodic review of the educational character and mission of the College and the oversight of its activities;
  • Approving the quality strategy of the College;
  • The effective and efficient use of resources, the solvency of the College and the Corporation and safeguarding their assets; approving annual estimates of income and expenditure;
  • The appointment, grading, suspension, dismissal and determination of the pay and conditions of service of the holders of senior posts and the Head of Corporate Governance and Policy, including, where the Head of Corporate Governance and Policy is, or is to be appointed as a member of staff, the Head of Corporate Governance and Policy’s appointment, grading, suspension, dismissal and determination of pay in the capacity of a member of staff; and
  • Setting a framework for the pay and conditions of service of all other staff.
