Who is this course for?

This course is for students looking to progress their football skills to an elite level with dedicated football training from Improtech, whilst studying on a full time qualification from level 1-3 (depending on GCSE’s at entry). Our Elite Football Development Centre runs as a professional academy would, combining academic studies with professional training and competitive games.

What do you need to apply for the course?

Football Development Centre players must be studying a full time qualification.  The majority of our players will study a Sport qualification at our Bede Campus.  However players can also study an A level programme or Public Services at our Bede Campus, or Engineering, Motor Vehicle or Construction courses at our City Campus.

What are the key things you'll learn?

Alongside your main qualification at either Bede Campus or City Campus our men and women’s Football Development Centre players will develop advanced skills under the guidance of Martin Scott (UEFA Pro license coach – the highest coaching qualification in the game) and Improtech coaches.  You will receive up to 10 hours of first class coaching to develop advanced football skills and awareness, technical and tactical knowledge and personal growth, as well as enhanced fitness and physical well-being supported by one of the country’s leading strength and conditioning coaches.

You will also gain access to fully qualified sports physiotherapists to support your rehabilitation and recovery and have regular individual player performance profile meetings including video analysis.

How you will learn

Academic studies are built around your training and games programme to provide a timetable that supports both academic and footballing excellence. Our players compete in regional, national and international competitions as part of their weekly competitive games programme.  Games against professional clubs also allow players to showcase their talents at the highest level.

Where could this course take you?

The Improtech programme has been successfully running in the North East for over 5 years, with players regularly moving on to football academies at Sunderland, Newcastle United, Middlesbrough and Hartlepool.  The very first Improtech student, Ethan Robson, is now a first team squad member at Sunderland Football Club.  Our Football Development Centre will support you with progressing into professional and semi-professional football as well as international scholarships.

What costs will you incur?

All Football Development Centre players are expected to wear college training kit for training and games.

Previous student comment:
“I’d do it all over again if I could… the best bit about the Football Development Centre is coming into college everyday and doing something you love with all your friends. The highlight of my career so far was when I got my first contract with SAFC as I’m a big Sunderland fan. You’ve got to have drive and determination though. You’ve got to push yourself to get the best out of college. I’m hoping to get offered a contract to play football professionally in America but thanks to my education, if I don’t I would like to be a sports psychologist”
