What’s it all about?

This qualification is designed to develop practical teaching skills and prepare you to work in a wide range of contexts.

The objective of this qualification is to:
- Confirm occupational competence in a teaching role within the workplace

You will require a minimum Level 3 qualification or a degree in the subject area that you wish to teach, depending on the subject.

Ideally you should have Level 3 in Education and Training qualification.

It is also desirable that you are working within a college/training environment and have experience within the sector.

You should have GCSE grade 4/C in English and Maths, or a Level 2 equivalent.

Teaching of this qualification will be through a range of methods, such as

- Lectures
- Seminars
- Talks with guest speakers
- Group work
- Individual activities
- Research
- Case studies
- Simulation

You will be assessed via a portfolio of evidence for each unit, in addition to observations of your practice and achieving 30 hours of practice.

The grading system is: achieved/not yet achieved.

We will support you to develop your Maths and English skills whilst on programme.

Using mathematical skills to analyse and interpret research data and English skills to communicate effectively in group and class discussion and engage in writing.

This qualification requires learners to complete a work/industry placement experience.

Learners will be required to complete a minimum of 30 hours of practice. If you are not already employed within the sector, you will need to secure an industry placement. Programme staff can support you with this.

Our curriculum staff have expertise in the field of education and training.

You will also have the opportunity to experience visits from a range of guest speakers within the field.

In addition to face-to-face delivery, it is expected that you engage in learning outside of the classroom to work on your portfolio of evidence and complete 30 industry hours.

The course runs on Thursday evenings between 6pm-9pm.

The qualification provides an introduction to teaching and aims to meet the needs of a range of trainee teachers, such as:

- Individuals who want to enter the teaching and training sector and who can meet the practice requirements, including the observed and assessed practice requirements, of the qualification
- Individuals who are currently teaching and training (including those who have just begun teaching and training) who can meet the practice requirements of the qualification, including the observed and assessed practice requirements
- Individuals currently working as assessors who wish to achieve a teaching qualification

To be awarded the Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training, you will need to have a minimum of three observations of your practice, complete 30 hours in an industry setting and successfully complete the following modules:

- Understanding roles, responsibilities and relationships in education and training
- Delivering education and training
- Using resources for education and training Assessing learners in education and training
- Planning to meet the needs of learners in education and training
- Teaching in a specialist area

The value of this course is 36 credits.
