Sunderland College welcomed a group of Brazilian students for an educational study and cultural placement.
The 11 students, who are all studying degrees in hospitality or gastronomy in their native country, arrived at Sunderland College in January to complete an 11-week placement.
During their time here, the Brazilian students studied with the College’s own students and participated in tourism, hospitality and gastronomy classes, in order to experience a different culture and an alternative way of learning. They also explored the culture of the region and visited tourist destinations such as Beamish, Bowness-on-Windermere, Durham, York, Edinburgh and the highlands and Hadrian’s Wall.
Sunderland College was selected by the Association of Colleges (AoC) to be a host college for this international project from Brazilian Ministry of Tourism.
Rob Stewart, Curriculum Manager for Hospitality, Tourism and Engagement at Sunderland College, said:
“It has been a pleasure to host the students. Their enthusiasm for the subject is infectious and they have been a real asset to the College. This is the first time we have hosted a Brazilian student placement and the fact we were chosen by AoC is indicative of the quality of education we provide in the areas of tourism, hospitality and catering.”
19-year-old Lucas Aiki Yamauchi, from Universidade Anhembi Morumbi in São Paulo, said:
“I would describe this experience here in Sunderland College with one simple word – gratitude. What makes a dish better is the salt, and what makes Sunderland College so special is the staff.”
