A-Level Psychology

You will need 5 GCSEs at grade 5-9, including English Language, Science and Maths.

Behaviour in humans and animals is very complex and the first year is designed so that you can explain behaviour from different perspectives. You will consider aspects such as the 'social situation' in which an individual finds themselves in, biological factors that might influence behaviour and cognitive factors, such as memory.

The second year builds upon a strong foundation from year 1 and you will 'apply' theories and/or research to particular topic areas, such as clinical psychology and criminological psychology.

Throughout the two years you will explore techniques and research methods that psychologists use to investigate human phenomenon. In addition, you will be confident in mathematical skills through the use of data gathering and analysis.

The majority of the course is classroom based including self-guided research. At the end of the course, you will have three 2 hr examinations.

English and maths are important life skills that will help you to achieve your best in your studies and progress to your dream career. If you have not already achieved grade 9-4 in GCSE maths and/ or English at school, we will support you to improve your skills.

The sixth form day is 9am-4.15pm and takes place Monday-Friday.

You will study each of your subjects for 4hr 45min per week, across three separate lessons.

Your timetable will be determined by the combination of subjects that your study, which will be made available to you at the start of the academic year.

You are not required to be on campus when you do not have a timetabled lesson, although we would strongly recommend that you are. Making effective use of our learning facilities and resources during such study periods, will ensure that you keep on top of your work and make significant progress in your studies, not to mention developing important time-management, organisation and independent-study skills.

The aims and objectives of the Pearson Edexcel Level 3 Advanced GCSE in Psychology are to enable students to:

- Develop essential knowledge and understanding of different areas of the subject and how they relate to each other
- Develop and demonstrate a deep appreciation of the skills, knowledge and understanding of scientific methods
- Develop competence and confidence in a variety of practical, mathematical and problem-solving skills
- Develop their interest in and enthusiasm for the subject, including developing an interest in further study and careers associated with the subject
- Appreciate how society makes decisions about scientific issues and how the sciences contribute to the success of the economy and society
