What’s it all about?

Develop your counselling skills with an approach that combines both theory and practice, designed to prepare you for a meaningful role in helping others. Ideally, you should have GCSEs at grade 4/C in English and Maths, or a Level 2 equivalent qualification.

If you have not yet achieved these qualifications, you may be able to study these whilst on programme and will receive support to complete these.. Speak to the programme leader for more information.

Teaching of this qualification will be through a range of methods, such as:

- Lecturers
- Seminars

You will be assessed via a portfolio of evidence. The grading system is: achieved/not yet achieved.

We will support you to develop your Maths and English skills whilst on the programme.

Using mathematical skills to analyse and interpret research data and English skills to communicate effectively in group and class discussion and engage in writing.

A work environment placement is not required for this qualification, however, students often find it helpful to engage in volunteering experience within a related sector to develop skills and experience of working with individuals.

Our curriculum staff have expertise in the field of the Counselling and are practicing Counsellors in a range of settings. You will also have the opportunity to experience visits from a range of guest speakers with the field of counselling.

The programme is currently taught on a Wednesday between 9:30am-5:30pm (delivery days and times ar subject to change).

This qualification is designed for learners interested in pursuing a counselling career and those interested in using counselling skills as part of their functional role in a wide range of sector areas. The programme is a starting point for those looking to progress towards accredited counsellor status with one of the counselling professional accrediting bodies.

This qualification aims to provide learners with more in-depth knowledge of the use of counselling skills in everyday life and work, and the approaches that underpin the use of these skills.

The objectives of this qualification are to help learners to:
- Develop counselling skills
- Understand the different approaches involved in the use of counselling skills
- Appreciate the importance of self-development

This qualification does not qualify learners to practise as a counsellor. It is a stepping stone onto a Higher Education programme, enabling you to progress onto qualifying as a counsellor.

To be awarded the Level 3 Diploma in Counselling Skills, learners are required to successfully complete 5 mandatory units:

- Developing counselling skills
- Theoretical approaches in the use of counselling skills
- Working ethically with counselling skills
- Counselling skills and diversity
- Counselling skills and personal development

The value of this course is 40 credits.

What’s next?

Upon completing this course, students can progress to further study, such as a Foundation Degree in Counselling, where they can deepen their expertise and enhance their career prospects.
