Who is this course for?

This course is intended for those students who have an interest in and want to know more about the visual arts. If you have a passion and flair for art and enjoy drawing, painting and exploring various media, art materials, techniques and processes, then this is the ideal course for you.

What do you need to apply for the course?

You’ll need a minimum of four GCSEs at Grade C or above, one of which should be an Art and Design subject.

What are the key things you'll learn?

This course will develop your visual awareness, improve your observational drawing skills and introduce you to the basic principles of Art and design. You will learn how to develop, review and refine ideas to produce personal creative outcomes in painting, drawing, sculpture and a wide range of media.

How you will learn

Primarily you will learn through practical lessons in well-appointed studios and you will find out what is happening in the world of art by visiting galleries, museums and exhibitions. Additionally, further independent contextual research will be encouraged by visiting artists and gallery websites, and by reviewing art on newspaper websites.

Where could this course take you?

A diploma in Art and Design will help you to pursue a career in the creative industries. Your next step is likely to be a higher education Art course at Sunderland College or a Foundation Diploma course followed by an undergraduate degree in a more specialist field of Art & Design at university.

What costs will you incur?

If you are aged between 19 and 23 years old (on the first day of your course) and do not already have a full Level 3 of higher qualification, you will not have to pay course fees. This may be different for learners studying on a course in the workplace.

If you are aged 19 or over, on the first day of your course, studying at Level 3 or above, you are able to apply for an Advanced Learner Loan to cover the costs of your course, similar to arrangements for higher education students.

Previous Student Experience

"I loved the variety of art and design subjects that the course covers. Many of them gave me skills and understanding of different techniques I’d not experienced before.”
