A-Level Mathematics is suitable for students who enjoy mathematical problem-solving and applying logical methods. Good mathematical ability and knowledge is very highly valued by potential employers in progressing to many interesting and rewarding careers, as well as enabling progression to higher education.
To achieve a good level of mastery, students should be prepared to spend extended periods of time outside of their timetabled classroom lessons practicing their skills and developing their understanding and knowledge.
Whether you intend to seek employment, or go on to University, after college, you will benefit immensely from your study of Mathematics.
You will need 5 GCSE's at grades 5-9, including Mathematics at grade 6.

A-Level Mathematics is a 2-year programme of study. You will be studying the Pearson/Edexcel specification.
Your course will cover many important mathematical topics and techniques and teaching is designed to cultivate your understanding of this mathematics in a way that expands your knowledge, promotes confidence and fosters enjoyment. You will develop a solid foundation for your career progression and further study.
Topics include a wide variety of important algebraic methods, trigonometry and geometrical methods, calculus (differentiation and integration) and numerical methods in pure mathematics. In addition, some important statistical methods and applications of mathematics to forces and motion will be studied in the Applied Mathematics module.
During your course, you will be assessed regularly by your lecturer to ensure that you are making good progress and to help with any difficulties you may have. At the end of the second year, you will sit three externally assessed exam papers:
- Pure Mathematics paper 1
- Pure Mathematics paper 2
- Applied Mathematics (Statistics and Mechanics) paper
English and maths are important life skills that will help you to achieve your best in your studies and progress to your dream career. If you have not already achieved grade 9-4 in GCSE maths and/or English at school, we will support you to improve your skills.
The sixth form day is 9am-4.15 pm, Monday-Friday. You will study each of your subjects for 4hr 45min per week, across three separate lessons. Your timetable will be determined by the combination of subjects that your study, which will be made available to you at the start of the academic year.
You are not required to be on campus when you do not have a timetabled lesson, although we would strongly recommend that you are. Making effective use of our learning facilities and resources during such study periods will ensure that you keep on top of your work and make significant progress in your studies, not to mention developing important time-management, organisation and independent-study skills.
You will study the following modules as part of this subject:
- Pure Mathematics 1
- Pure Mathematics 2
- Applied Mathematics (Statistics and Mechanics)
