What’s it all about?

This course is designed for learners aged 18 or over, who wish to develop their knowledge of the safe handling of medicines. It is ideal for those who are already employed in a health and social care context, who wish to study the programme as part of their own continuous professional development or for those who wish to improve their understanding to increase their opportunities of finding work.

Learners wishing to undertake the certificate should be aged 18 or over. You will need to have or be working towards at least a Level 1 qualification in literacy as you will be expected to write answers for assessment purposes.

You will be added to our Equal platform where you will receive log in details and have access to all course resources and be allocated your own personal tutor who you can contact throughout your studies. You will be required to work through a series of tasks and activities designed to reinforce the learning process and demonstrate your knowledge. Your tutor will assess your work and provide feedback confirming your understanding of each unit. (This qualification is also available paper-based on request)

This is a 16-week course which provides you with submission dates for each assessment. You will be required to use your own time management for study and submission dates.

This qualification is ideal for anyone who works in the healthcare sector or anyone who wishes to work in this sector in the future. The qualification is also suitable for anyone who handles medication while in a caring role.

The qualification aims to develop learners’ knowledge of the safe handling of medicines within a health and social care context. It provides an introduction to the various medicines learners are likely to encounter in a work environment, covering how medication is supplied and administered and the possible side effects. The programme explores the procedures for obtaining, storing and disposing of medicines and the legislation surrounding these three areas. It also emphasises the importance of the audit process and issues surrounding responsibility, accountability and confidentiality.

This course is split into four manageable units:

- Unit 1: Understand medication and prescriptions
- Unit 2: Supply, storage and disposal of medication
- Unit 3: Understand the requirements for the safe administration of medication
- Unit 4: Record keeping and audit processes for medication

After successfully completing the course candidates will be able to further their own continuous professional development, which may improve their career prospects or progress to further training. You could also progress on to further study in the field or other Distance Learning programmes. This qualifications provides you with the knowledge of handling medication, however you would need to complete an observation with your employers before being allowed to administer any medication in a health and social care setting.
