What’s it all about?

Looking to start your journey into teaching? This qualification is ideal for those who want to explore a career in education or deliver training in a workplace setting. Designed for individuals who aren’t currently in a teaching role, it provides a comprehensive introduction to teaching and learning, focusing on further, adult, and community-based education. No prior teaching experience is required, making it accessible to those with a passion for sharing knowledge and guiding others. You’ll develop a solid foundation in the principles of teaching, learning strategies, and classroom management, preparing you for a rewarding path in education.

You will need to hold a Level 3 Qualification in the discipline you are interested in teaching. For example: To teach Health and Social Care you must hold a Level 3 vocational qualification or A levels in a relevant subject.

GCSE or Level 2 Maths and English. If you don't have these qualifications you should be willing to work towards these to support progression and employment within the sector.

This course is taught using a variety of methods including practical sessions, group discussion, written assignments and a micro teach.

Our teachers will model best practice in their teaching delivery providing you with the opportunity to evaluate a range of teaching, learning and assessment methods. This will support you in the development of your own teaching and learning toolkit. We have high expectations that our learners will embrace a learner centered approach.

English and Maths are important life skills that will help you to achieve your best in your studies and progress to your future career. Throughout this course you will be supported to develop Maths and English skills in relation to embedding them within a classroom environment. It is an expectation that you will have Maths and English qualifications as part of the entry criteria. If you don't have these qualifications you should be willing to work towards these to support progression and employment within the sector.

We will have a range of guest speakers from within the sector to support learning and development in specific areas relating to teaching, learning and assessment.

This is an introductory course for anyone who is thinking about a career change or anyone who delivers training in the workplace. It aims to provide an introduction into teaching and learning within further, adult and community based education. You are not expected to have any prior knowledge or experience of teaching.

Unit 1 Understanding roles, responsibilities and relationships in Education and Training.

The purpose of the unit is to enable you to understand the role and responsibilities of a teacher in education and training and the relationship between different professionals and learners.

Unit 2 Understanding and using inclusive teaching and learning approaches in education and training

The purpose of this unit is to enable you to understand and use inclusive teaching and learning approaches to meet the needs of learners. It includes how to create a learning environment that engages and motivates learners. This unit requires you to complete a micro teach in order to evaluate your own delivery practice.

Unit 5 Understanding assessment in education and training

The purpose of this unit is to enable you to understand how different types and methods of assessment are used in education and training. It includes ways to involve learners in assessment and requirements for record keeping.

The College does not organise teaching hours you must source these yourself.

What’s next?

Upon completing this course, students can progress to the Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training, provided they secure 30 hours of teaching experience, either paid or voluntary. This next step deepens your teaching knowledge and opens doors to a range of roles in education and training environments. With the foundational skills gained, you’ll be ready to explore opportunities in further education, adult learning, or workplace training, advancing your career while gaining valuable hands-on teaching experience.
