What’s it all about?

This course is for students aged 16 and over who want to continue their education through applied learning and who aim to progress to higher education to gain employment in the sport and exercise science sector.

Students will study 13 different units across the 2 year course and also complete meaningful work experience in a job role of their choice.

Students will benefit from the opportunity to develop their technical employability skills. Embedded within skills development lessons are English, Maths and digital literacy skills, all essential in providing our students the best possible opportunity for job success.

Lecturers will support students with both academic and skills focused sessions that not only identify strengths and areas of improvement but help create meaningful lessons that cater for all needs.

Students who wish to take this qualification will have successfully completed a Level 2 programme of study with GCSEs in either Physical Education (PE) or Science.

Entry requirements include at least 5 GCSEs at grades 4 or higher, including Maths, English and either PE or Science.

This qualification has been developed in consultation with academics and employers to ensure that it supports progression to higher education and employment in the sport and exercise science sector.

Throughout the year, students will identify their skills gap and create SMART goals and action plans, with the purpose of developing their skills and behaviours. The skills and behaviours identified by the college include:

- Communication
- Self-belief
- Independence
- Critical thinking

The course will be taught flexibly, with students developing their knowledge through classroom learning, practical activities using our outstanding facilities and an opportunity to learn remotely to help develop digital literacy skills in the future.

English and Maths are important life skills that will help you to achieve your best in your studies and progress to your dream career. This particular course requires students to have already achieved a grade 4 or higher in both English and Maths.

All students will be expected to take part in a meaningful work placement. Students will be supported through a range of work experience development opportunities and guided through this process by our in-house Skills Development Coach.

This programme will enable students to work with employers and different sport, exercise and physical activity providers. There are various employers that the college works with, including the Martin Nugent Elite Performance Centre, RISE, UK Coaching, the Foundation of Light, South Shields Football Club, Youth Sport Nutrition and others.

As aspiring sports and exercise scientists, there will be many additional opportunities embedded within the programme designed to help you develop your skills and behaviours in line with progression onto your next steps.

Mon-Fri at 9am-4pm. Days and times of study are subject to change. Timetables are confirmed at the start of term.

Our Sports Academy is home to industry standard facilities to support students to progress to a range of careers in sport. The academy has an impressive fitness suite, equipped with a range of cardio and weight training equipment along with a sports hall designed to facilitate a wide range of sports and access to Martin Nugent’s Elite Performance Centre.

Within the academy, students will have the opportunity to make use of our state-of-the-art physiology and sports therapy labs along with two outdoor 11v11 football pitches, a 9v9 training football pitch and access to 4G all weather sports pitches at GOALS.

Alongside our excellent facilities we provide a welcoming, supportive learning environment for students to ensure they reach their true potential.
