What’s it all about?

This career focussed HNC is for you if you are looking to pursue a career in healthcare or progress your career in this rewarding sector. This course will provide the opportunity to gain the work-related skills and knowledge required for career progression and professional development or to embark on a new career within the field of healthcare. The course is organised into two semesters that span the academic year.

You must be 18 years of age or over and possess one of the following:

- BTEC Level 3 National Certificate/Diploma in Health and Social Care (or related subject)
- AVCE/Advanced S/NVQ Level 3 in appropriate vocational area
- One A Level with passes (9-5) or two A Level passes at grade 4 (C) in relevant subjects
- An Access to Higher Education Diploma awarded by an approved further education institution

In addition to the above you require:
- GCSE in Maths and English or equivalent at Level 2
A satisfactory DBS Clearance

Applications are also welcome from mature students with relevant substantial work experience. Acceptance on the course may be subject to diagnostic assessment at interview.

Teaching and placement:
You will be taught through a combination of lectures. You will have 12 contact hours per week consisting of taught lectures. The programme also includes a mandatory 225 hours work placement across the duration of the programme. Placements must be in a setting providing direct care to service users.

Independent learning:
When not attending lectures and placement you will be expected to continue learning independently through self-study. Typically, this will involve reading journal articles and books, working on individual and group projects, undertaking research, preparing coursework assignment and presentations, and preparing for examinations

Your independent learning is supported by a range of facilities including the Learning Resource Centre and support if required from HE Academic Tutor.

Overall workload:
Your overall workload consists of class contact hours, independent learning and assignment activity.

Academic support:
Our HE Academic Support Tutor provides help in the following areas:
- Study skills (including reading, writing, note-taking and presentation skills)
- Written English (including punctuation and grammatical accuracy)
- Academic writing (including how to reference)
- Research skills (in conjunction with the learning centres)
- Critical thinking and understanding arguments
- Revision, assessment and examination skills (including time management)

Teaching staff:
You will be taught by an experienced teaching team, whose expertise and knowledge are closely matched to the content of the modules on the course. The team includes lecturers with industry experience. Our teaching is informed by the relevant practice within the sector and 100% of our lecturers have a teaching qualification

The course provides you with opportunities to test your understanding of the subject informally before you complete the formal assessments that count towards your final mark. Each module normally contains at least one piece of ‘formative’ assessment for which you receive feedback from your tutor. There is a formal or ‘summative’ assessment at the end of each module.

Assessment methods include written tasks, assignments, portfolio work and presentations. The grades from formal assessment count towards your module grade

Percentage of the course assessed by coursework:
100% of the course is assessed by submission of module work and completion of 225 hours completed placement.

You will receive feedback on formal assessments undertaken by coursework. Feedback is intended to help you learn and you are encouraged to discuss it with your module tutor.

We aim to provide you with feedback within 15 working days of hand-in (formal coursework assessment).

The programme includes a mandatory 225 hours work placement across the duration of the programme. Placements must be in a setting providing direct care to service users.

2 full days in college plus a full day on placement (225 hours across the year). Extra time will be required for self-guided study and course work.

Timetables are normally available at enrolment. Please note that while we make every effort to ensure that timetables are as friendly as possible, scheduled teaching can take place on any day of the week. This programme is taught for two days per week.

The course is offered with one pathway: Integrated Health and Social Care pathway

The programme structure includes mandatory core, mandatory specialist and optional units and students are required to achieve 120 credits to pass the course. Each unit is equivalent to either 15 or 30 credits.

- Demonstrating Professional Principles and Values in Health and Social Care Practice
- Addressing Health Inequalities
- Supporting Individuals with Specific Needs
- Effective Reporting and Record-keeping in Health and Social Care Services


Our HE Academic Support Tutor can provide help with study skills, written English, academic writing, research skills, critical thinking and revision, assessment and examination skills.

What’s next?

You could progress onto a health and social care related Batchelor’s degree programme at university by applying through UCAS. This includes professional Batchelor’s degrees in an associated field, such as nursing, physiotherapy and social work.

Career options also include employment within the health and social care sector, such as health care assistant and support work roles in a range of health and care settings including within the community.
