You complete between 6-9 mandatory units and a range of optional units.
Mandatory units include:
- Advising and consulting with clients
- Shampooing, conditioning and treating the hair and scalp
- Cutting hair using basic techniques.
- Developing and maintaining your effectiveness at work
- Gaining skills and knowledge in barbering techniques
You will need at least two GCSEs at grade 4 including English Language and preferably maths, or a Level 1 hairdressing qualification and you will be required to pass a skills assessment at the start of the course.

You will have an excellent experience and benefit from practical and theory lessons taught from an industry perspective in our City Campus classrooms and salons.
During practical sessions, you will develop commercial skills with ongoing assessments. Within theory lessons, you will be required to do group work and research projects and attend online examinations for each individual unit.
You will be assessed by completing theory tests and will demonstrate your competency by doing practical assessments in our barber salon.
English and Maths are important life skills that will help you to achieve your best in your studies and progress to your dream career. If you have not already achieved grade 9-4 in GCSE Maths and/ or English at school, we will support you to improve your skills
Mon-Fri, 9am-4pm. Days and times of study are subject to change. Timetables are confirmed at the start of term.
This course is for learners aged 16 and over and aims to provide knowledge and skills in barbering techniques.
You will study a range of modules, including:
- Cutting men's hair
- Cutting facial hair to shape
- Drying and finishing men's hair
- Creating basic outlines and designs
- Shampooing and conditioning hair
After successfully completing the course, you will have a Level 2 in Barbering and could work in a salon commercially.
Alternatively, you could progress to study the Level 3 in Barbering.
