What’s it all about?

The objective of the qualification is to support those seeking to gain and/or develop the skills, knowledge and confidence to coach and mentor people as part of their normal role. It’s also the ideal starting point for a career in coaching and mentoring. The qualification is designed to provide learners with the skills and knowledge to be able to appropriately coach and mentor other learners. The qualification is suitable for people who are teaching, coaching or training and/or who need to be able to coach and mentor individuals in a range of settings including on-the job or in a training company, FE College, Adult Learning Service or an organisation’s internal training department. It is also suitable for learners who want to diversify into coaching and mentoring.

You must have a GSCE English Language or a Level 2 Functional Skills equivalent.
You must be occupationally competent in the vocational area in which you are providing coaching and mentoring
You will need to be assessed in a real work environment so will need to be employed within a setting in which you are providing coaching and mentoring.

Teaching and Learning for this qualification will include a range of classroom-based activities. The method of assessment for the qualification is through building a portfolio of evidence, assessed activities including essays, reports and posters and observation records of your own coaching and mentoring in a setting carried out by the course assessor.

You will be expected to commit to 3 hours per week in college. In addition to this, you will be expected to spend time outside of the classroom to build your portfolio of evidence.

This qualification covers the core skills, knowledge and understanding needed to support learners in a coaching and mentoring capacity

Learners must achieve all five mandatory units which include:
- Understanding Mentoring
- Mentoring Practice
- Engage Others in the Learning and Development Process
- Preparing for the Coaching Role
- Coaching Skills

What’s next?

Learners that successfully achieve this qualification can go onto study at a higher level including:
– Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training
– Level 4 Award in the Internal Quality Assurance of Assessment

Learners may also go onto secure employment in a coaching and mentoring role.
