What’s it all about?

Do you dream of one day being paid to make films, TV shows, documentaries, commercials, podcasts or music videos? Do you hope one day to report the latest news and sport? If so, this is the course for you!

You will develop 5 key skills throughout this course: informing ideas, problem solving, technical skills, professional practice and communication. You will develop project management skills and develop your understanding of client and audience needs and expectations.

You will learn what it takes to be a content creator in the media industry and have direct control in creating and fashioning your own distinctive productions.

You will need 4 GCSE's at grade 4-9 including English Language.

16-18 Free You will need to provide your own stationery and you will be given the opportunity to take part in trips and visits, for which there may be a fee. You will also need an SD card, ideally 64GB or larger.

You will be taught through workshop-based sessions that encourage hands on experience of industry standard software and techniques. You will be given industry style creative briefs and work to create a variety of media products. In doing so, you will enhance your theoretical knowledge of codes and conventions used in the media industry, as well developing an understanding of how to tailor media products to reach a clearly defined audience.

You will plan your products, go through a production phase and then complete post-production to fine tune your creations using a range of media software and hardware. You will engage with a diverse selection of media, from advertisement to documentary and creative fictional work.

You may work in a variety of mediums dependent on your creative briefs, which could vary from poster campaigns, to moving image video work, or podcasting and audio projects. Your projects may involve working on location, or within our professional film studio, or radio studios.

English and Maths are important life skills that will help you to achieve your best in your studies and progress to your dream career. If you have not already achieved grade 9-4 in GCSE Maths and/ or English at school, we will support you to improve your skills.

You will have the opportunity to network and work with a variety of people involved within media. The course involves collaborating and completing projects for external clients, as well as a variety of workshops, seminars and lectures from prominent member of the film and media industry.

On this course, you will study modules including:

- Skill Development - You will explore key fundamentals of media practice, learning how skills are integrated and connect to generate developed outcomes.

- Creative Project - You will apply the skills you have been developing throughout the programme to a creative project that demonstrates your ability to self-direct a response to a brief from inception to completed product.

- Personal Progression - You will explore a range of career opportunities, produce valuable materials, and demonstrate specialist skills relating to your goals for personal progression.

- Creative Industry Response - You will focus on advancing your practical, critical and reflective skills to produce work in response to an industry brief.

What’s next?

Successful completion of this course, along with an appropriate grade and portfolio, will provide access to a wide range of specialist university courses or an apprenticeship.

Whilst on the course you will develop a comprehensive digital portfolio of practical evidence alongside a showreel of your work to assist you when you take your next steps after college. You will also have opportunities to gain valuable practical work experience that would assist you transitioning into employment within the industry.
