What’s it all about?

This course is ideal for students who are aiming to progress to employment or to Higher Education in the vital sector of health and social care. With a growing number of jobs available in the sector, this is an ideal course for those with a passion for health, care and making a difference.

You will have the opportunity to develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours required by employers. The course will enable you to:

- Prepare for further learning or training
- Develop essential knowledge, transferable skills and personal skills in health and care with the aim of enhancing your employability
- Develop your knowledge and skills as part of their Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
- Achieve a nationally recognised vocational qualification

You will also have the opportunity to acquire the essential knowledge and tools for the world of work by developing transferable skills, such as planning, research and analysis, working with others and effective communication.

You could progress to a range of careers such as social work, nursing, psychology, midwifery or physiotherapy.

To enrol on this course, you will be required to have five GCSE’s at grade 4 or above, including Maths and English.

DBS Clearance is also needed to attend placement.

This course is taught through classroom learning, development of practical skills in our state-of-the-art health hub, directed study and placement. This will allow you to apply theory to practice and develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours that are required by employers.

You will be assessed through, coursework, which includes, presentations, reports, essays and role plays. The course requires you to attend 100 hours work placement over the two years of the course, which is one day per week. This will enable you to link your care practice to the units delivered in the classroom.

A GCSE grade of 4 or higher in Maths and English is a pre-requisite for this course. If you do not achieve a grade 4 in both Maths and English then you would study our Level 2 in Health and Social Care for 1 year and then progress to this level 3 course.

We work in close partnership with many of the North East's leading health and social care employers to ensure our students get the best opportunities to progress in their future career path. Some of our employer partners offer students who complete and achieve their programme of study a guaranteed interview with their organisation.

Employers include Sunderland Care and Support, South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust, and Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust.

Your timetable will be issued at enrolment.

Timetables usually run across 4 days in college between the hours of 9am-4:30pm. Your timetable will also include a designated day for your placement hours.

You can progress on to employment or degree level study health and social care related areas, leading to careers in areas such as social work, psychology, midwifery, nursing or physiotherapy.

There is a growing demand in Sunderland and the North East for occupations such as:

- Nurses
- Social Workers
- Probation Officers
- Care and Home Workers
- Senior Care Workers

What’s next?

You can or progress to study health and social care at degree level, leading to careers in areas such as social work, psychology, midwifery, nursing or physiotherapy.
