This course is for our South Shields Football Club (FC) Academy student athletes who wish to combine a qualification in Sports, Coaching and Development with our elite training and competitive games programme.
Based at 1st Cloud Arena, the home of South Shields FC, it is an ideal course for those student athletes who are interested in becoming a sports coach or physical education teacher. The course provides a fantastic opportunity to learn from industry specialists, develop coaching and teaching skills, and enter a life-long career in this exciting and rewarding sector.
Student athletes will also spend 1 day per week at our Bede Campus to benefit from the industry facilities in our world class Sports Academy.
Acceptance to the South Shields FC Academy is subject to a successful football trial.
You will need 4 GCSE's at grade 4-9 including Maths and English. Or a relevant Level 2 qualification.
Entry to this course will also depend on a successful trial with South Shields FC Academy.

This is a practical course that includes elements of theory.

As part of the course students will study a number of units such as:
- Careers in the sport and active leisure industry
- Health, wellbeing and sport
- Developing coaching skills
- Applied sports coaching
- Anatomy and physiology
- Rules, regulations and officiating
- Influence of technology in sport
- School sport delivery
Students will also gain additional coaching qualifications, including safeguarding and first aid, as well as taking part in workshops, masterclasses and placements with some of the country’s leading coaches, sports clubs and organisations.
Our South Shields FC Academy graduates can progress on to professional and semi-professional football.
Many of our graduates also progress to a ‘third year’ programme in Gym Instructing and Personal Training, or progress to our Higher Education programmes in Sports Coaching.
