This Level 4 qualification enables progression for individuals currently working within the care sector to develop skills in Postive Behavioural Support (PBS) and progress to Level 5 and Level 6 practitioners.
The aims and objectives are as follows:
- To develop knowledge and understanding about positive behavioural support
- To develop competence in supporting functional behaviour assessment and using a behaviour support plan
- To develop competence in supporting others to use positive behavioural support in their team
You will need Level 3 qualification in a relevant area. Including GCSE Maths and English at a grade 4/C or above.
Learners must be currently be working within a health and social care setting and must have an assigned supervisor within your organisation who already holds a level 6 or above in Positive Behavioural Support.

There are 2 delivery options for learners on programme - face to face delivery, or remote delivery via Microsoft Teams.
For either delivery option, teaching consists of 9 full day sessions between September-May, taught by a lecturer from Sunderland College. You will also have regular sessions with a supervisor within your practice setting.
This Level 4 qualification has been uniquely developed in partnership with the North East North Cumbria Integrated Care Board and Sunderland College.
This is a major workforce initiative to help the development of appropriate competence in in positive behaviour support for staff in health and social care settings who are supporting people with learning disabilities and/or autism and who have behaviours that challenge. A workforce development approach is being used which focusses not only on the education of individuals, but also on developing the infrastructure in organisations for postivie behaviour support to be aided in practice.
You will study modules including:
- Creating High Quality Care Environments
- Ensuring Effectiveness of a Behavioural Support Plan
- Facilitating Effective Positive Behavioural Support
- Foundations of Positive Behavioural Support
- Supporting Positive Behavioural Supportin Practice
- Facilitating Positive Behavioural Support in Teams
After completing the programme, learners can progress to further study and may complete the Level 6 and Level 7 Positive Behavioural Support programmes (subject to in practice mentor availability). Learners could also apply for the FdA Healthcare Practice Foundation Degree or the Working with Children and Families Foundation Degree.
