What’s it all about?

This course has been designed as a reintroduction to education for students aged 19+ who wish to achieve a Level 2 qualification, with the overarching aim to progress to a Level 3 qualification.

This course has been written with emphasis on progression to an Access to HE course and covers knowledge that is imperative on all the different Access diplomas.

Not only is this course ideal for students who require the entry requirements to Access, it also allows the development of academic writing skills, develops time management skills and reflection and confidence needed to study a Level 3 qualification. There is consistent support available from a tutor, lecturers and a programme leader.

Alongside the Progression Award, students will also study Level 2 English and Maths if not previously achieved to assist in their academic abilities as well enhancing their employment opportunities.

You will need to have or work towards Level 1 qualification in Maths and English. If you do not have these qualifications you may be asked to complete a short Get into Access course.

On this course you will experience a combination of teaching and learning styles:

- Classroom lectures
- Workshop/study sessions
- Directed work with other students
- Directed private study

The knowledge gained through these sessions will allow you to produce a variety of assignments, such as essays, reports, presentations and leaflets, ect. You will also have the opportunity to use the amazing technology facilities at our Bede campus, such as the immersive igloo.

Alongside your Progression Award qualification, you are required to complete Level 2 Math's and English if you do not already have these qualifications.

On this course you will cover a range of subjects including:

- Fractions, Decimals and Percentages - this unit will refresh students mathematical skills, whist also supporting those students completing a GCSE in Maths
- Rights and Responsibilities - this unit will allow students to gain an understanding of rights available to individuals in the UK, as well as the responsibilities of companies and organisations. The knowledge gained in this unit enhances employability skills
- Understanding Plagiarism - this unit allows students to gain an understanding of academic integrity and will assist in ensuring they follow policies and guidelines on the educational journey
- Introducing Psychology - this module allows students to gain an understanding of different psychological perspectives that underpin all diplomas on the Access to Higher Education programme, as well as analysing psychological research
- Punctuation and Grammar - this unit will refresh students academic writing skills, whist also supporting those students completing a GCSE in English
- Word Processing Software - this unit will allow students to be familiar with the requirements of completing an academic course and ensure they have the ICT skills needed
- Understanding Disability, Law and Society - this unit will allow students to understand the different legislations that support disabilities as practitioners

What’s next?

Successfully completing this course gives you the opportunity to progress onto a Level 3 qualification in the next academic year.

This course is taught by lecturers within the Access to Higher Education team. Students also have access to the college Students Services team and have the opportunity to progress to other Level 3 qualifications.
