This course will equip you with the practical skills and knowledge of the business environment preparing you for further education and employment.
This course is for any 16-18 year old who has a keen interest in finding out about how businesses work and enjoy study that is based on realistic workplace situations.
You will need to have a standard of literacy and numeracy at Level 1 supported by the equivalent to 2 GCSEs at grade D

The course is practical, theoretical and realistic. You’ll be assessed through report writing, presentations, creating newsletters, observed role plays, group activities and time constrained tasks.
You’ll also have the opportunity to gain industry experience.
English and Maths are important life skills that will help you to achieve your best in your studies and progress to your dream career. If you have not already achieved grade 9-4 in GCSE Maths and/ or English at school, we will support you to improve your skills.
You will complete a mandatory industry placement during your two years of study. The placement will be a minimum of 45 days, where you will be given the opportunity to work with an employer to develop your career-ready skills whilst you study.
We have links with the NHS, Sunderland City Council, Hays Travel and Software City, as well as many other organisations.
You will complete a minimum 45 days industry placement and participate in employer set projects. Part of your course is to build relationships with industry and part of your studies will include guest speakers, workplace visits and trips to key employers in the North East.
Mon-Fri, 9am-4pm. Days and times of study are subject to change. Timetables are confirmed at the start of term.
The aims of the course are for students to develop an understanding of a broad range of issues relevant to the sector, including:
- Business context - an overview of organisational cultures and values, different types of internal and external stakeholder, different forms of governance and the impact of organisations on society and the environment
- Project and change management - an understanding of the common change management theories and models and how to support and improve projects
- Business behaviours - the importance of good communication and adapting social communication styles to professional standards and according to purpose, medium and audience
- Quality and compliance - the importance of maintaining and improving quality in all aspects of public and private sector organisations
Each module has a credit attached and your lecturers will make you aware on enrolment and will be published in your course handbook.
The knowledge, understanding and skills learnt in studying a BTEC First will aid progression to further study and prepare learners to enter the workplace in due course. In the business sector, learners would be aiming to move into entry-level roles, such as assistants in business administration, marketing, finance, human resources, sales and customer service.
