Who is this course for?
The course is intended for anyone with a passion for art and is looking for a potential future professional career in the visual arts sector. It is aimed at any student who wishes to develop their skills in painting, drawing, sculpture, print making and photography.
This programme gives you the opportunity to work in a variety of specialisms including, Painting & Drawing, Sculpture, Photography and Digital Media. Over the course you will develop a substantial personal portfolio and also take part in an exhibition of your own work. You will be directed towards how to best prepare for employment within the creative industries or how to take the next step into the final year of a full degree. This course offers a much more personal experience with smaller class sizes than larger universities.
What do you need to apply for the course?
You will need to have a minimum of 32 UCAS points to apply for the course.
It is also desirable that you have at least a level 2 qualification in English and maths. Mature candidates will be considered without the formal qualifications, dependent upon their former experience.
All applicants will need to attend an interview; you should bring a portfolio and sketchbooks containing examples of your current work to this.
What are the key things you'll learn?
Over this programme you will complete 8 units which currently include;
- Visual Communication in Art and Design
- Ideas Generation and Development in Art and Design Contextual and Cultural Referencing in Art and Design Professional Practice in Art and Design
- Digital Media in Art and Design
- Drawing Techniques and Processes in Art and Design Communication with Images in Art and Design Exhibition of Art Work
How you will learn
You will learn through a range of Lectures, seminars, workshops, individual tutorials, exhibition and gallery visits and self-directed study.
You will be assessed on practical course work, sketchbooks and presentations. You will also complete two pieces of written work per year.
Where could this course take you?
Following completion of the HNC, you may then opt to progress to the HND in Art & Design and then onto a BA (Hons) Top-up degree at a number of institutions with the primary route being to Sunderland University.
Alternatively you could choose to move into the industry as a practicing artist or a range of Art & Design related jobs including – Fashion designer, Graphic designer, Illustrator, Printmaker, Photographer, Textile designer, Advertising Creative, Product designer, Interior Designer, Art Teacher, Art Technician, Art therapist, Community arts worker, Arts administrator, Multimedia specialist and a Museum or Gallery Curator.
What costs will you incur?

Printing for your course – you will receive £30 credit for printing which will be paid in three installments of £10 per term. Any printing requirements in excess of this can be purchased.
You may choose to purchase books from the recommended reading lists however the College Learning Centre have an excellent range of all books suggested within your units studied.
You will be expected to provide your own pens, paper, folders, sketchbooks and a range of art materials for your studies.
Also during your studies you will be given the opportunity to take part in a UK trip and potentially an overseas field trip to New York. In the past as a department we have visited places such as London, Edinburgh, Liverpool, York and France – please note that these trips are optional only and are not a requirement to complete the course successfully.
