Our state-of-the-art welding and fabrication workshop is run to industry standards and includes specialist facilities for MIG, TIG and MMA, Oxyacetylene, gas and plasma cutting.

Engineering needs creative people who can solve problems and use specialist skills to find solutions. You could work in lots of different areas of engineering including mechanical, electrical and civil. A career in engineering will give you a real opportunity to change the world and shape the future!

The workshop provides outstanding facilities for our students, including industry standard and specific equipment to help them develop hand fitting skills including measurements, marking out, cutting and forming of metals.

  • 14 individual welding bays covering all aspects of welding disciplines: MIG, TIG, MMA and Oxyacetylene.
  • Industry standard fabrication equipment including: guillotine, box benders, linisher and band saw.
  • Gas cutting and welding equipment
  • Plasma Arc Cutting equipment
  • Hand Tools including Grinders, measuring tools, squares, scribes and snips.

The hub provides industry standard training to apprentices, school leavers and adult learners, enabling them to learn skills and techniques that are widely used in the industry, how to use the equipment correctly and safely within a safe and secure environment.

Sunderland College also provides training and development for employers and their employees.

Our students learn practical skills through their academic learning, then putting this knowledge into practical activities in a safe place without the pressures put on them in a real-work environment.

The workshop also helps them develop employability skills to succeed their chosen industry.

Our students develop skills in communication, team building and practical hand skills required for the welding and fabrication industry, including:

  • Risk assessments and health and safety awareness.
  • Practical welding activities in MIG, TIG and MMA processes.
  • Welding practical assessments to industry standard.
  • Hand fitting and fabrication skills.
  • Technical drawing and reading skills.
  • Housekeeping and 5S knowledge.
  • Work readiness and career development knowledge
