Foundation Learning students visit Bishopwearmouth Garden Centre

Sunderland College foundation learning students recently had the opportunity to visit places they could work or volunteer after finishing their college programme.

The visit gave the students a chance to have a look around the garden centre to familiarise themselves with the surroundings. They were also given the opportunity find out what tasks they would be expected to do at the garden centre if they were to volunteer or work there.

Bishopwearmouth Garden Centre supports students with learning difficulties while working in the garden centre. The college will be visiting the garden centre again soon, in order to give the students’ parents a chance to visit and see if they feel this is a suitable placement for their child.

Lisa Hutchinson, Sunderland College Foundation Learning Mentor said:

“It was a great day out for all and I know the students thoroughly enjoyed their time spend there. I really liked that the opportunities available at the garden centre would help to promote independence and self-worth for the students.”

Bree Anne Campbell Transition Qualification student added:

“I like that you could still chat to your friends and enjoy yourself while potting the plants. I also liked that they treated you like you worked there.”

Sunderland College organises many visits to a variety of employers to prepare students to progress after finishing their programme.
