Hairdressing students take part in Shimmers Hair Salon Masterclass

Our Level 3 Hairdressing students recently took part in a masterclass on alopecia, giving them the chance to gain the skills and understanding involved with offering a variety of services to clients.

The students benefitted from a business talk from Lynne Webster, owner of Shimmers Hair Salon, who turned her salon round after the 2008 financial crash, going on to be nominated for entrepreneur of the year.

They were then introduced to a young alopecia sufferer who visited the college with Lynne, to show the impact hair loss solutions can have on confidence. The workshop was designed to inspire the students and to encouraged them to consider new options for their career in hairdressing.

Debbie Oliver, Salon Professionals Lecturer and Andrew Rimmer, HE Transitions Officer said:

“It was amazing to have this opportunity to work with Shimmers Hair Salon, it was great to see the students so engaged in the session. We hope the event has raised their aspirations as future entrepreneurs and we hope to welcome Shimmers back to deliver another session soon!”

“What an amazing day, there was so much to learn and take part in and it really helped me to consider my options in the hairdressing industry.”

Lynne Webster, Owner of Shimmers Hair Salon added:

“It was a fabulous day of training, I had decided to teach about hair loss rather than fashion colour teachings but give them something specialised that is not on the curriculum. The objective of the workshop was to inspire, motivate and raise awareness of hair loss. It was wonderful to see the students so engaged and enjoying the workshop. Hopefully one day we may have future Hair Loss Specialists from Sunderland College and we would love to be guest educators once again in the near future!”
