Travel and tourism students were provided with a unique insight into the real world of aviation thanks to a placement with one of the largest airlines in the UK.
A group of eight students, who are studying Level 3 Travel and Tourism and HND Travel and Tourism at Sunderland College, worked with the ground staff from Jet 2 at Newcastle International Airport in an exciting work placement.
Victoria Moyse, Senior Employment Manager at REED NCFE (working for Sunderland College), said:
“I support travel and tourism students at Sunderland College with co-ordinating work experience and am always seeking to forge relationships with new and exciting employers on the students’ behalf. Every year travel students have aspirations to experience careers at Newcastle Airport and I am delighted that this year, with the fantastic support of Jet2, we have been able to make those dreams a reality.”
The work placement took place over 6-day and included weekends to ensure students experienced the busiest periods. The students have also been given the opportunity to apply for future employment opportunities with Jet2 as a result of their experience.
Rebekah Hepworth, who is studying Level 3 Travel and Tourism at Sunderland College, said:
“I’ve found the whole experience with Jet2 amazing, and have gained valuable, hands-on, customer service experience within the airport and with Jet2. I’ve enjoyed observing the passenger service agents. Every member of the Jet2 team – from the check in staff, floor staff and sales staff – have been so helpful and I’ve learned from each and every one of them.
“It’s confirmed 100% that my future lies within the airport industry and hopefully with Jet2. I didn’t want this experience to end as I’ve learnt so many wonderful things and I’m so thankful I was able to do this.”
Dave Richardson, Customer Helper and Duty Manager Ground Operations for Jet2, said:
“The students from Sunderland College fully applied themselves to the whole experience. They were engaged, friendly and professional in their dealings with both the Jet2 colleagues and customers alike. They displayed a high level of customer service skills and a great amount of enthusiasm for the role. They were an absolute credit to the College.”
Sunderland College’s first cohort of esports students are celebrating after receiving impressive grades in their technical qualifications.
