Public Services students meet the marines

Sunderland College Public Services students recently benefited from a Royal Marines visit to gain insightful information on career paths available in the armed forces.

During the visit, the level three public services students were able to listen to the Commandos who discussed their personal experience with the armed forces and the career pathway they took to get to where they are today.

The visit also included a practical element, where students were able to take part in a fitness session, which mimicked how Royal Marines are expected to train once they are recruited. The hour long session involved circuit training and a game of ‘animal farm’ where students were able to learn how to ‘duck walk’, ‘bear crawl’, ‘bunny hop’ and much more.

The visit inspired and engaged students with real public service personnel and allowed them to experience at first-hand what military training looks and feels like. It also helped to raise awareness of the benefits of joining the armed forces and the discipline required to be successful.

James Ibinson Sunderland College Public Services Lecturer said:

“This was an inspirational insight into the life of a Royal Marines Commando. Students benefited hugely from having real life Royal Marines visiting Sunderland College to share their experience and knowledge of the uniformed public services. They engaged very well with both the physical and theoretical side of the visit and shared very positive feedback afterward. We look forward to working again with the Royal Marines in the near future.”

Christina Defty, Sunderland College Public Services student added:

“The physical session was very challenging but it motivated me to push myself as far as I can. I also really liked the presentation as it showed me what it’s really like to be a part of the Royal Marines.”

Sunderland College plan to invite Royal Marines back into college to deliver more sessions to help students get a feel for a career in this industry.
